You explore seemingly natural wetlands of the river Rhine and the extremely fertile cultivated Ortenau area on this mainly fl at bicycle tour. Start with us at the Breisach market square and follow the Rhine bicycle path in the direction of Sasbach through an area of seemingly unspoiled wetlands past the fi shing town of Burkheim with its castle ruins, the hidden Sponeck castle containing the remains of a Roman fort up to Limberg as the northern outpost of the Kaiserstuhl volcanoes. At this point, you turn east and cycle through extensive orchards to the medieval town of Endingen. The edge of the Black Forest has now come noticeably closer, but the Ortenau loess hill landscape is located in front of it. This is the landscape that interests us now. Roaming through it, we reach Ettenheim. In Ettenheimmünster, we are almost touching the Black Forest, but turn again towards the river Rhine south of Europa-Park and reach the southern edge of the Taubergießen reserve near Niederhausen. The Rhine bicycle route takes us fi rst through the old tobacco villages of Oberhausen and Weisweil and then back to the river. Passing the formally planned Wyhl nuclear power station on a trail right next to the river, we return to Limberg. From here, you can cycle back to the starting point in Breisach either on the Rhine dyke or through the wetland woods.
